Staying cool

  • Bring sun protection (hats, sunscreen, umbrellas, water bottles, etc.)

  • Consume plenty of fluids at the water stations and take adequate rests in shaded areas

  • Watch-out for your fellow swimmers (lifeguards will also be on duty)

  • Please note, we will not be having a barbeque this year. We suggest participants bring snacks and send someone out on the day to pick up dinner for their team.

  • If you would rather avoid the heat, feel free to choose a cooler time or day to swim. We totally understand! We would just ask that you let your team leader and Swim for the Reef know about your change of plans.

Counting laps

Remember, the overall tally of laps in 2017 will be added to last year’s 5,700 laps, as we aim to swim the equivalent distance of the Great Barrier Reef. Don't forget to log your laps by sending updates on the hour to EDO Qld (we will let you know the number prior to the day)

Team photos

If your team would like to enter our best costume competition you will need to upload a photo of your team to Facebook and/or Instagram using the hashtag #swimforthereef  before 11.30am on Saturday for judging

EDO Qld will be taking team photos at Musgrave Park from 11-11:30am.

Food

Please note, the main event at Musgrave Park Pool will not be having a barbeque this year. We suggest participants bring snacks and send someone out on the day to pick up dinner for their team.

For those participating at other locations, please check with your team leaders to confirm any food arrangements.

How to participate

Here’s how it works:

  • Swim any style or distance you prefer

  • Only one swimmer per team is allowed in the pool at a time

  • Flotation devices and swimming aids are permitted

  • Amusing costumes and team names are encouraged!

  • Prizes may be awarded for best costumes, most laps swum, best team spirit and best Reef helpers.

Each team is responsible for registering the team, creating team rosters and counting and reporting laps. (Teams, please make sure all your participants are registered!)

  • It is the responsibility of all participants to ensure their health and safety at the event

  • Participants under 18 years are to be supervised by a responsible adult at all times

  • Parents or legal guardians of participants under 18 years of age must provide written consent for participant when registering

  • The order, duration and number of times a team member swims are at the discretion of the team.

  • Good sportsman-like conduct will be demanded of all participants.

  • If you are tired and feel you can't go on, let your team know.

  • Wherever you swim, you are an ambassador for Swim for the Reef. Please be courteous and considerate and adhere to the rules and safety regulations of your chosen location.

Swim etiquette for pools

As there may be more than yourself swimming in the same lane, please take note of the following:

  • Stay as far to the left in the lane as possible

  • Always be mindful of other swimmers

  • During the night hours, please be aware that there may be people living near the pool

  • No diving in the shallow end

  • Have fun, enjoy the challenge and look out for each other!

Safety for other venues (beaches, lakes, etc)

  • We recommend only swimming in areas supervised by qualified lifeguards and following their safety rules

  • Pay attention to local conditions and swim safely

  • While you are swimming, make sure someone on land knows where you are at all times
